Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt (40 hours per week; overtime eligible)

Hourly Rate:  $22-$26 per hour, based on qualifications and experience

POSITION SUMMARY

The Facilities Lead is a hands-on, working supervisor responsible for coordinating facility vendors and custodial contractors while performing a wide variety of skilled maintenance duties. This position supports the operation, maintenance, safety, and presentation of all museum facilities, systems, and grounds.

The Facilities Lead ensures proper functioning of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, networking, security, safety, carpentry, irrigation, waste management, and exhibit installation/maintenance activities. This role collaborates across departments and interacts with staff, volunteers, vendors, guests, and lessee/landlord personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

In coordination with the Deputy Director and museum staff, the Facilities Lead:

  • Maintains a safe, clean, and operational environment across all museum facilities

  • Coordinates facility-related vendor contracts and ensures required insurance documentation is obtained and maintained

  • Coordinates custodial staff schedules, projects, and assignments

  • Conducts daily inspections to ensure high standards of appearance, safety, and readiness

  • Performs maintenance and repairs related to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, networking, carpentry, irrigation, and related systems

  • Works with team on the installation and breakdown of exhibits, including unpacking, packing, shipping, building, and storage, while meeting deadlines

  • Maintains exhibits, including lighting, cleaning, pest management, and general repairs

  • Oversees maintenance of grounds, buildings, labs, storage areas, leased facilities, and restrooms

  • Coordinates maintenance and repair of utilities and building systems

  • Manages purchasing, usage, and inventory of maintenance and custodial supplies and equipment

  • Maintains building plans, manuals, and operational documentation

  • Utilizes and monitors a work order system to track completion of maintenance tasks

  • Responds promptly to building emergencies, which may include evenings or weekends

  • Advises the Deputy Director on facility management matters

  • Operates tools and equipment including hand tools, power tools, scissor lifts, forklifts, and bobcats (as properly trained)

  • Performs facility support for special events, programs, and fundraisers

  • Assists management with development and tracking of facilities-related budgets

  • Adheres to all Western Science Center policies and safety procedures

  • Assists management with safety compliance and training

  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         High school diploma or GED

·         Minimum five (5) years of experience in commercial or industrial facility maintenance

·         Minimum three (3) years of supervisory experience in facility maintenance or building operations

·         Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and building systems

·         Experience coordinating vendors and service providers

·         Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents

·         Ability to perform physically demanding work and lift up to 50 pounds

·         Ability to access confined spaces, work at heights, and climb ladders

·         Valid California Class C driver’s license and ability to operate vehicles for work duties

·         Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

·         Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as needed

·         Ability to respond to urgent building service or safety issues after business hours when required

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills in English

·         Must be authorized to work in the United States

·         Adaptability and flexibility in response to changing work demands

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

·         Construction project coordination experience

·         Budget development and expense tracking experience

·         Knowledge of computer systems hardware and networking

·         Experience operating scissor lifts, forklifts, and bobcat equipment

·         Strong organizational and multitasking skills

·         Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·         Sensitivity to cultural, historical, and natural history artifacts

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires physical activity including lifting, bending, climbing, kneeling, twisting, reaching, and working in various weather conditions. The employee may work at heights and may use tools, chemicals, lubricants, and pesticides in the performance of duties.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be able to detect auditory and visual alarms.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is a non-exempt position eligible for overtime in accordance with California law. This position may require response to after-hours emergencies as operational needs dictate.
